Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

UNIC Manama in partnership with the Embassy of Palestine to the Kingdom of Bahrain and with the support of Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People through an official function on 30 January 2017 at the UN House.  The event involved statements from UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi, UN Environment Regional Director, Dr Iyad Abumoghli who delivered a statement on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator Amin El Sharkawi, the Assistant Undersecretary for GCC & Western Countries Affairs, Ministry  of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dhafer Ahmed Alumran, and the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to the Kingdom of Bahrain, H.E Taha Mahmood A Qadir, all of whom pledged their support to the cause of Palestine.  The event was well attended by ambassadors, heads of missions and media representatives.


Workshop on Powerful Public Speaking Skills for UN Staff

UNIC Manama in partnership with Y Access Training Solutions organized a training session entitled “Powerful Public Speaking Skills” for UN staff members on 26 January 2017 at the UN House.  The training was conducted by Mohamed Ali Shukri, the first Arab to reach the 2006 World Championship of Public Speaking finals in Washington DC, where he was titled as one of the “Top Ten Speakers in the World”.  Using the Sustainable Development Goals as a case study, participants were taught key techniques for preparing speeches that conveyed messages with impact thereby raising awareness and inspiring action.  19 staff members from the UN Country Team in Bahrain including the UN Resident Coordinator and Heads of UN Agencies attended the highly interactive training session.


Event to Conclude Speech Writing Contest on Peace & Sustainable Development

Further to the Speech Writing Contest on Peace and Sustainable Development that was launched as a part of the 2016  International Day of Peace commemoration organized by UNIC Manama in partnership with the Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club, an event was organized by UNIC Manama on 05 January 2017 at the UN House to mark the conclusion of the contest.  The event was attended by H.E Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amin El Sharkawi, UN Resident Coordinator as well as representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, embassies, members of both the Lions and Social Member Clubs respectively and UN staff members.  Four participants from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were selected as the contest finalists and were given an opportunity to present their speeches in front of the dignitaries.  The participants were then awarded certificates and cash prizes sponsored by Al Areen Lions Club which were handed over by the Undersecretary for International Affairs and the UN Resident Coordinator.


Media Training for Volunteers from Non-Governmental Organizations

UNIC Manama, in partnership with the Bahrain Voluntary Works Society and the Bahrain Social Media Club organized a media training for volunteers from Non-Governmental Organizations and UN Country Team staff members that took place on 26 November 2016 at the Isa Cultural Centre in Bahrain.  The full day workshop provided training to participants on various aspects of media management such as writing news stories, drafting press releases, organizing press conferences and utilizing social media portals.  As one of the trainers, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi briefed participants on press conferences, spokesperson & media management.


Visit of Applied Science University Students to UNIC Manama

In line with the UN4U initiative, students from the Applied Science University in the Kingdom of Bahrain visited UNIC Manama on 24 November 2016 to better understand the role and workings of the United Nations.  The students were briefed by UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi on the structure of the UN, the role of the various UN agencies in the country and region as well as on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN Country Team in the Kingdom of Bahrain commemorated the 71st anniversary of the United Nations on Monday, 24 October 2016 with the support and participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labour and Social Development.  The focus of this year’s celebration was the Sustainable Development Goals and the steps being taken at the national level to ensure their implementation.  A press conference led by UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi took place in the morning of the UN Day at the UN House Conference room with the participation of HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amin El Sharkawi, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative and Heads of UN Agencies and their representatives from UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain, UNDP Bahrain and WMO.  The UN Day reception took place on the evening of 24 October 2016 at the Grand Ambassador Ballroom, Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel and was well attended by Ministers, Ambassadors, Representatives from Media, Civil Society and Academia.  The highlight of the reception was the showcasing of specially designed adaptable wheelchairs to raise awareness on UNDP Bahrain’s programme for persons with disabilities and the importance of creating an inclusive society by improving accessibility, independence and mobility for the disabled in line with SDG Nos 4, 8, 10, 11 & 17.  The wheelchair initiative was inaugurated by the Minister for Labour & Social Development, HE Jameel Bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan following which all dignitaries, ambassadors and invitees had the opportunity to try the adaptable wheelchairs in order to help them understand the difference between an ordinary wheelchair and the adaptable ones and also to be able to view and experience things from the perspective of a wheelchair bound individual.


Educational Outreach Activities to Raise Awareness on the UN’s Role & the Sustainable Development Goals

In line with the UN4U initiative and the UN Country Team Bahrain’s 71st anniversary celebrations, UNIC Manama organized the following two educational outreach activities on 18 October 2016 to raise awareness on the UN’s role in the country/region as well as on the Sustainable Development Goals:

  • A field trip to the UN House of 35 school students and 9 teachers from various public schools in Bahrain organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
  • Visit of UN Officials to the AMA International University for a students’ briefing session

Both events involved briefings by officials from the various UN agencies based in Bahrain such as the UN RC Office, UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain, UNIC Manama and WMO.  This was followed by an interactive session where the students and teachers were given an opportunity to ask questions and exchanges ideas with the agency focal points.

UNIC Manama, under the patronage of HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain and with the support of Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club, commemorated the International Day of Peace through an event that took place on 21 September 2016 at the UN House Conference Room.  The event was attended by HE Dhafer Ahmed AlUmran, Asst. Undersecretary for GCC & Western Countries Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain, UN Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi, UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi, representatives from the UN Country Team, Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club.  The highlight of the commemoration was the launch of a speech writing contest for youth on the subject of “World Peace and Sustainable Development” as a way of raising awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals in the country and region.  The competition organized in partnership with Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club is open to youth from GCC countries and entries are required to focus on any of the 17 Global Goals and how each of them can pave the way for achieving peace.

UNIC Manama joined the Ministry of Health, the Bahrain Cancer Care Group and the Indian Embassy of Bahrain in commemorating the International Day of Yoga through a seminar aimed at showcasing the health benefits of learning and practicing yoga,.  The event which was attended by over 150 people, took place on 21 February 2016 under the patronage of H E Faeqa Bint Saeed Al Saleh, Minister of Health for Bahrain who addressed the gathering.  Statements were also delivered by the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, H E Alok Kumar Sinha as well as UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi who delivered the Secretary-General’s message on Yoga Day and drew attention to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No 3 which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for people of all ages.  This was followed by a presentation by Bahraini Yoga-Therapy Specialist Fatima Al Mansoori who highlighted the importance of yoga in improving overall well-being and health.


Meeting with President of the University of Bahrain

UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi joined the UN Country Team led by the UN Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi, for a meeting with the  newly appointed President of the University of Bahrain, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah to discuss areas of future cooperation between the University and the UN Country Team.  During the meeting which took place on 19 June 2016 at the University’s premises, the President was briefed on the role of the UN Agencies in Bahrain and several areas of possible mutual cooperation were discussed including raising awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among the University’s students.

UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi attended a “Kids Fun Day Out” event for children with special needs organized by Bahrain for All in partnership with the Regional Institute for Autism (RIA), UCO Rehabilitation Centre, Special Needs Families Support (SFS) and with the support of UNDP Bahrain and UNIC Manama.  More than 100 children with special needs enjoyed a fun filled day of games, activities, painting and music that took place on 04 June 2016 at Seef Mall in Muharraq, Kingdom of Bahrain.  The event aimed at raising awareness on the importance of engaging with differently-abled individuals in order to create equal opportunities for all.  UNIC Director spent the day interacting with the children and further distributed prizes to all the children who participated in the various activities.  In a special statement issued to mark the event, UNIC Director expressed his appreciation to the Government of Bahrain, particularly HRH The Prime Minister for his support to such noteworthy causes.  He also commended the Bahrain for All Team and its partners for organizing such an event that provided an opportunity for children with special needs to showcase their talents and enjoy themselves while simultaneously raising awareness on their needs.  He further drew attention to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adding that building a sustainable, inclusive world for all requires the full engagement of people of all abilities.

UNIC Manama supported the Government of Oman in organizing a Social Media Training workshop that took place at the Hormuz Grand Hotel in the Sultanate of Oman.  The workshop was attended by media and communications focal points from various ministries and government bodies in Oman including the Ministry of Information and the Omani News Agency who were briefed on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ways in which social media platforms can be utilized to raise awareness on the Global Goals.

UNIC Manama organized an open discussion between Bahraini members of the International Social Media Club and the UN Country Team on 04 May 2016 at the UN House conference room to brief the members on the role of the UN agencies in the country/region and on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The Club members were briefed in detail on the work of the UN Country Team in general and on the importance of the Global Goals in particular by the UN Resident Coordinator a.i. and UNDP Resident Representative a.i Amin El Sharkawi, UNEP Regional Director, Iyad Abumogli, WMO Regional Representative, Dr Hesham Abdel Ghany and UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi.


UNIC Manama’s Participation at the First Edition of the Bahrain Chapter of the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) Conference

UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi was one of the main guest speakers at the inauguration of the first edition of the Bahrain Chapter of the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) conference that took place on 28 April 2016 at the Al Hekma International School premises.  UNIC Director’s address emphasized the importance of MUN Conferences in providing students with a platform to voice their opinions and to discuss issues that affect the world and further shed light on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adding that youth have a crucial role to play in achieving the SDGs.


UN Corner at Al Wasat Newspaper’s Used Books Exhibition

UNIC Manama in partnership with the Al Wasat Newspaper created a  UN Corner at the newspaper’s Used Books Exhibition that took place from 21-23 April 2016 at the Country Mall in Bahrain.  With UNIC Manama’s support, the newspaper devoted a section of the Exhibition to display UN publications and reports and further placed the “17 Goals to Transform Our World” logo on their announcement flyers.  Roll-up banners featuring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in English & Arabic were also displayed prominently at the exhibition to raise awareness on the 17 Global Goals.

UNIC Manama in partnership with the University of Bahrain created a UN Corner at the University’s stand at the 17th Bahrain International Book Fair that took place from 24 March-03 April 2016 at the Bahrain National Museum.  In view of the transfer of UNIC Manama’s library to the University’s Central Library Premises in May 2015 and in order promote the University’s status as a UN Depository Library in Bahrain, the University with UNIC Manama’s support devoted a section of their stand to display latest UN publications and reports which were distributed free of cost to interested visitors.

UNIC Manama joined the Al Areen Lions Club Bahrain in commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Strategic Partnership between Lions Club International & the United Nations.  The celebration which was held on 12 March 2016 at the Ramee Grand Seef Hotel was attended by members of Bahrain’s Lions Club Chapter, diplomatic corps and civil society.  In his address as Guest Speaker at the event, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi highlighted the several years of successful partnership between the Lions Club and the UN.

UNIC Manama supported the UN Country Team and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the production of a documentary showcasing the historic and enduring partnership between the Government of Bahrain and the UN as part of the UNCT’s 70th anniversary commemoration. The documentary entitled “The UN and Bahrain: An Enduring Partnership” was launched on 21 February 2016 by H E Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain at an official event at the Isa Cultural Center and was attended by ministers, ambassadors, diplomats, academia, civil society, media and UN Bahrain staff members.


Commemoration of the International Day to End Violence against Women & Girls

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women,   25 November 2015,  UNIC Manama with the support and participation of Ms Rouaa Al-Hayki, Member of Council of Representatives & Chair of Women & Child Issues at the Parliament, organized a gathering for women colleagues from the UN Country Team in order to provide an opportunity for female colleagues to interact with Ms Al-Hayki on the importance and necessity of combating violence against women and girls and to encourage a dialogue on this issue which continues to be a global pandemic.  Women colleagues from UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, the UN RC Office and UNIC Manama participated in the discussion and shared their views on tackling violence against women and girls.

From 16-18 November 2015, Ms Cristina Gallach, the Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information visited the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to strengthen and re-enforce partnerships between the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) and the two countries.  The Under-Secretary-General, accompanied by the Acting Director of UNIC Manama, Samir Aldarabi met several key officials in both countries and discussed areas of mutual cooperation aimed at increasing the level of UN information outreach withing the countries.


UNIC Director’s Participation as Plenary Speaker at the AMA International University’s Research Colloquium

UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi participated as a plenary speaker at the AMA International University’s 3rd Research Colloquium entitled Towards Research and Teaching Quality in Engineering, Information Technology, Business and Natural & Social Sciences” that took place at the University’s campus on 31 October 2015. The event focused on the importance of research and on the need for collaborating with international organizations to improve the quality of research and also highlighted the dynamic role that the university has played in contributing towards the environment and science through valuable research outputs. UNIC Director’s presented on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a particular focus on Goal No 17 on the importance of strengthening the means of Implementation and revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development.

The UN Day and the 70th Anniversary of the organization was celebrated by the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Bahrain on Monday, 26 October 2015 at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel with the support and participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The focus of the UNCT Bahrain’s UN Day & UN 70 commemoration this year was the historic and enduring partnership between the Government of Bahrain and the United Nations. This was highlighted during the UN Day Reception by the launch of the trailer of a documentary that is expected to be released in December 2015, focusing on the history of Bahrain’s engagement with the UN from independence to its growing international role on the world stage and a photo exhibition showcasing key moments from Bahrain’s participation at the UN from independence till date. HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was the Guest of Honor, inaugurated the photo exhibition following the official screening of the documentary trailer.

In line with the UN4U campaign and the UN Country Team Bahrain’s 70th anniversary celebrations, 30 school students and eight teachers from nine different public schools in Bahrain visited the UN House as a part of the schools’ field trip.  The visit was organized by UNIC Manama in cooperation with the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain.  The visit involved a briefing session on the role of the UN in Bahrain and in the region by officials from the various UN agencies based in Bahrain such as UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain, UNIC Manama, WMO and ICAO and screening of UN70 videos.  This was followed by an interactive session where the students and teachers were given an opportunity to ask questions and exchanges ideas with the agency focal points.


UN Section at the University of Bahrain’s Central Library Premises

On 07 October 2015, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi visited the University of Bahrain’s Central Library premises to tour the newly created UN section following the transfer of UNIC Manama’s publications to the University’s premises in May 2015. Over 5000 UN publications and reports, covering a wide range of issues and topics such as environment, development, education, food & agriculture, trade, children, women etc to name a few, were transferred to the University’s premises in order to make UN publications and reports easily accessible to large number of students, researchers and teachers. The UN section has been created within the Central Library’s Special Collections Section where the latest UN publications and reports will be displayed. The remaining publications will be incorporated along with the University’s existing publications based on topic. UNIC Director was received by the University’s Vice President for Academic Programmes & Higher Studies, Dr Waheeb Al-Naser and the Director of Library & Information Services, Dr Hedi Talbi who thanked UNIC Manama for donating the UN publications.

UNIC Manama in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Social Development and UNDP Bahrain organized a press conference on the UN Sustainable Development Summit taking place in New York from 25-27 September 2015. The purpose of the conference was to raise awareness on this milestone UN Summit as well as to highlight Bahrain’s active participation and commitment to the Post-2015 Development Agenda process. The press conference which took place on 20 September 2015 involved an in depth presentation on the Sustainable Development Summit and the new 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) led by the UN Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann. This was followed by statements from H E Faeeqa Bint Saeed Al Saleh, Minister of Social Development and Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs who shed light on Bahrain’s success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the steps being taken at the national level to transition to the SDGs and to achieve the same by 2030 as well as on the delegation from the Government of Bahrain led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa who will be attending the Summit in New York.

UNIC Manama in cooperation with UNDP Bahrain organized a media briefing session on 12 July 2015 for journalists from Bahrain to raise awareness on the Third International Conference on Sustainable Development taking place in Addis Ababa from 12-16 July 2015.   The briefing session which took place at the UN House conference room involved a welcome address by UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi, a detailed presentation by the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Peter Grohmann who shed light on the background of the Financing for Development Conference and its importance both globally and at the national level for financing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and a screening of two videos on the Financing for Development Conference.

UNIC Manama joined the Indian Embassy of Bahrain, The Art of Living Foundation Bahrain Chapter, the Middle East Medical Center (MEM) and Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam in commemorating the International Day of Yoga. The celebrations which took place on 21 June 2015 at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam Auditorium in Segaya kicked off with an interactive yoga and meditation session that was attended by a large number of people. This was followed by a press conference to further shed light on the importance and benefits of Yoga which  involved the participation of the Acting Director of UNIC Manama Samir Imtair Aldarabi, Mr Ram Singh, First Secretary of the Indian Embassy to Bahrain, Dr Akbar Jaffari, Chief Executive of JAFCON, Dr Spyridon Trous, Medical Services Manager of Bahrain Petroleum Co (BAPCO), Dr Ravi Preet Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the Middle East Medical Centre and Ms Fatima Al-Mansoori, Yoga Therapist and Lifestyle Management Coach. Mr Aldarabi expressed his appreciation to the Indian embassy and the other organizers and shed light on the UN’s decision to proclaim 21 June as the International Day of Yoga following the address of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly. Mr Aldarabi further delivered the Message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the International Day of Yoga and drew attention to the fact that Yoga offered a simple, accessible and inclusive means to promote physical and spiritual health and well-being and also promoted respect for one’s fellow human beings and for the planet we share.

In line with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, UNIC Director received members of the Palestinian Community in Bahrain on 30 November 2014 who delivered a petition addressed to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Furthermore, as a part of this year’s commemoration of the day and in line with the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Embassy of Palestine in Bahrain with UNIC’s support visited Al Ahlia University and the AMA International University as a way of encouraging the academia’s and in turn the youth’s discussion on the issue of Palestine.


10th Bahrain Universities Model United Nations Conference

UNIC Director attended the 10th Bahrain Universities Model United Nations Conference that took place from 27-28 November 2014 at the Sheraton Hotel and involved the participation of students from several universities in Bahrain as well as from the GCC countries (UAE, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia & Kuwait). The conference which was organized with the support of the General Organization for Youth & Sports (GOYS) and with UNIC’s cooperation, was inaugurated by H H Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, President of the Supreme Council for Youth & Sports. On the second day of the conference, i.e. on 28 November 2014, UNIC Director briefed the Security Council on bio and nuclear terrorism and the need to reform the UN Security Council to ensure a fairer geographical repartition of membership and veto rights.


Al Falah Girls School’s Field Trip to the UN House

In line with the UN4U initiative, UNIC, on 26 November 2014 organized a visit of 35 students and three teachers from the Al Falah Girl’s School for a briefing on the role of the UN in general and on the UN Country Team in Bahrain in particular. The visit was organized as a part of the school’s field trip. The session involved briefings from UNIC, represented by the Director Nejib Friji, UNDP represented by the Assistant Resident Representative Mohammed Al Sharif, UNEP represented by the Executive Officer, Omaya Atiyani, and UNIDO represented by Ehab Jassim and Ghadeer Al Sayed. Towards the end, the floor was opened to the students and teachers for questions which lead to an interactive and insightful discussion. The session concluded with a screening of two informative videos on the UN.

In line with the UN4U initiative, UNIC Director visited the Riffa Views International School on 24 November 2014 for a briefing session on the UN to the school’s Grade 11 students. In his address, UNIC Director drew attention to the role of UNIC as well as that of the UN Agencies in Bahrain and also highlighted the Post-2015 development agenda and the MY World Global Survey. At the conclusion of the lecture, UNIC Director on behalf of the UN Country Team, received a cheque for BHD900/- that the school had raised to aid the cause of Palestine.

On UNIC’s initiative, the AMA International University launched a week long MY World Global Survey voting campaign to raise awareness on the survey and to provide an opportunity for all the staff and students from the university to cast their vote in the survey. The campaign was launched on 23 November 2014 at 17:00 hrs through an event that involved statements by Ms Buena Canzana, Head of Administration, Ms Manal Sahwan, Head of Student Affairs, Dr Nabil El Kadhi, Provost and UNIC Director Nejib Friji. Around 260 votes were cast during the course of the campaign from 23-30 November 2014.

UNIC Director was chief guest at the American Mission Hospital’s commemoration of Universal Children’s Day that took place at the hospital’s premises on 20 November 2014. The day involved a painting session at the pediatrics wing of the hospital and a briefing session to the hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff members on the importance of the day. UNIC Director Nejib Friji delivered the statement of the Secretary-General and drew attention to the role of several UN agencies such as UNICEF, OHCHR, ILO and WHO that have been working tirelessly for the protection of children’s rights. He further highlighted the importance of nutrition and need to encourage healthy eating habits among children in order to prevent Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and obesity. This was followed by a tour of the hospital’s children’s ward where UNIC Director had the opportunity to interact with visiting parents and their children.

UNIC joined Aluminium Bahrain (ALBA) Labour Union’s commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims that took place at ALBA’s premises on Sunday, 16 November 2014 from 08:30 hrs. The event, which involved the participation of 300 staff members from ALBA, featured the launch of a campaign entitled “Our Children are Waiting for Us” in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate for Traffic and included statements from Mr Tim Murray, CEO of ALBA, Major Osama Mohd Bahar, Acting Director of Traffic Culture Directorate, Ali Binali, Head of ALBA’s Labour Union and UNIC Director, Nejib Friji.


AMA International University’s Research Colloquium

UNIC Director participated as a plenary speaker at the AMA International University’s Research Colloquium that took place at the University’s campus on Saturday, 01 November 2014 at 09:00 hrs. The purpose of the colloquium, which involved the participation of research coordinators from the various colleges of the university, was to encourage all the researchers to ensure that their research output was of the highest quality and to publish the findings both locally and internationally. UNIC Director’s address highlighted the important role played by UNITAR in delivering innovative training to individuals, organizations and institutions and further shed light on the MDGs and the Post-2015 development agenda.

The UN Day was celebrated by the UN Country Team (UNCT), Bahrain on Thursday, 23 October 2014 at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel under the patronage and with the participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The focus of the UNCT Bahrain’s UN Day commemoration this year was the Post-2015 Development Agenda. The official function in the morning featured a Post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda Workshop that took place at the Al Fanar Ballroom, Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel from 09:00-14:30 hrs. The workshop which comprised of three sessions and involved the strong participation of the UNCT, representatives from concerned line ministries as well as members from Bahrain’s civil societies, was opened by H E Ghanem Fadhel Al Buainain, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. UNIC Director Nejib Friji participated in the second session with a presentation on the MY World Global Survey results for Bahrain.

The evening’s reception took place at 19:00 hrs at the Al Muharraq Ballroom, Diplomat Radisoon Blu Hotel and was well attended by ministers, MPs, ambassadors, diplomatic corps, academia, civil society, media and members of the UN family. The official function included statements from the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Ghanim Fadhel Al Buainain and the UN Resident Coordinator, Peter Grohmann. The evening also featured brief presentations by three Bahraini women who highlighted how the UN helped change their lives through their personal success stories as a result of benefiting from the UN’s programmes and projects.

UNIC Director attended and delivered a statement at the Intel Business Challenge MENA Awards Ceremony 2014 that was held on 03 September 2014 at the Ramee Grand Hotel, Seef. The challenge was organized by UNIDO Bahrain under the banner Manama 2014: Arab Capital for Entrepreneurship & Innovation in cooperation with Intel Corporation, MENA Center for Investment, Arab Thought Forum and the General Union for Arab Chambers under the patronage of Capital Governor H E Shaikh Hisham Bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa. H E Samira Rajab, Minister of State for Information Affairs as well as other guests and dignitaries attended the same. The Intel Business Challenge featured over 3,300 applications from innovator entrepreneurs from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Palestine who submitted their projects to take part in the competition.

UNIC Director was chief guest at the General Organization for Youth & Sports’ (GOYS) exhibition entitled “City of Youth 2030” organized at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre on 12 August 2014 in commemoration of International Youth Day. The exhibition which was led by the President of GOYS Hisham Al Jowder highlighted the various programmes and training opportunities available for young Bahrainis as well as the Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Awards for Youth Creativity. UNIC Director further delivered the statement of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighting the theme for 2014 Youth Day commemoration i.e. Mental Health Matters and further drew attention to fact that that 20 per cent of the world’s young people experience a mental health condition each year with the risks being particularly high during their transition from childhood to adulthood

UNIC Director joined the Bahrain-Japan Business & Friendship Society (BJBFS) in commemorating World Environment Day 2014 under the theme “Small Islands & Climate Change”. The event took place on 04 June 2014 at the New Millenium School under the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa Governor of the Capital Governorate and involved statements from H E Mohammed Bin Daina, Chief Executive of Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Environment, the Deputy President of BJBFS, Mr Nasser Al Arrayed and UNEP ROWA’s Regional Director, Mr Iyad Abumoghli. This was followed by a presentation entitled “The Day of Action” by Mr Rehan Ahmed, Head of the Waste Disposal Unit of The Supreme Council for Environment and a song by the students of the New Millennium School.

UNIC supported the Ministry of Justice & Islamic Affairs & Waqf in organizing the International Conference on “All Civilizations in Service of Humanity” that took place at the Gulf Hotel from 05-07 May 2014. The three day conference bought together 300 religious figures and scholars from over 80 countries to foster the message of peace and religious understanding and involved several sessions and debates on relevant topics such as the role of human civilizations in strengthening unity among human societies, religious teachings and its impact on co-existence, plurality of civilizations and the duties of citizenship etc. UNIC Director, Nejib Friji chaired a session on the third day of the conference on “Democracy and human rights in the light of multiple civilizations” which involved the participation of Mr Patrice C. Brodeur as Researcher and Judge Mohammad Abdul Salam as Commentator.

UNIC Director was keynote speaker at the 11th Arab Media Forum entitled “Media Change and Challenges” that took place at the Regency Hotel in Kuwait from 27-29 April 2014. Following the launch of the MY World Global Survey in the Kingdom of Bahrain during the UN Day commemoration on 24 October 2013, UNIC assisted the UN RC office in launching the MY World Global Survey promotional video through an official function on 20 April 2014 at 12:00 hrs at the UN House Conference Hall. The launch bought together representatives from the media, key Bahraini advocates featured in the video and UN partners to engage individuals in Bahrain to voice their development priorities in order to help world leaders as well as the UN shape the Post-2015 development agenda that will succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Furthermore, Gulf Air, an esteemed partner of the UN in this initiative, began screening the promotional video onboard all flights starting 01 May 2014.

In line with the UN4U initiative and the MY World campaign launched by the UN Country Team in Bahrain on UN Day 2013, UNIC visited the Quality Education School on 16 April 2014 to brief the students on the role of the UN as well as to raise awareness on the MY World Global Survey. UNIC Director briefed the students on the UN and its goals and role in the region and more importantly on the MY World Global Survey and encouraged all students to cast their vote in the survey. This was followed by an interactive quiz session which involved active participation from the students as well as a screening of the UN4U and MY World videos respectively.

On UNIC’s initiative, the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Bahrain namely UNIC Manama, UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain and the UN RC Office participated in the 16th Bahrain International Book Fair 2014 organized by Bahrain’s Ministry of Culture, from 27 March to 06 April 2014 at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. The UNCT contributed to the UN presence at the fair by distributing their latest reports and publications free of charge to the visitors to the stand that comprised of ministers, ambassadors, members of parliament, students from various schools and universities, academia, civil societies and the general public. The focus of the UN stand was the MY World Global Survey and the Post-2015 development agenda. Therefore visitors to the UN stand were briefed on the MY World Survey and were encouraged to cast their vote in the same. Over 500 votes were collected from the book fair. In addition to the MY World Survey, the book fair provided an opportunity for the UNCT to interact with the citizens/residents of Bahrain and educate them on the UN presence in Bahrain and the role the different agencies play both in Bahrain and in the region.

UNIC joined the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) in commemorating the International Day of Sport for Development & Peace on 30 March 2014 at the Amwaj Lagoon. The commemoration featured the launch of the Asian OPTIMRST Sailing Championship under the UN theme “Sports for Development and Peace” organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee led by the President of the Committee, HRH Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the First Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth & Sports HRH Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa and the Acting Secretary-General of the BOC, Mr Abdelrahman Sadeq Askar. The sailing championship involved the participation of young men and women from around the world and concluded on 06 April which is the International Day of Sport for Development & Peace. UNIC Director delivered the statement of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon where he stressed on the importance of sport as a low-cost and high-impact tool in humanitarian development and peace-building efforts.  He further commended Bahrain’s initiative in launching the sailing championship under the theme “Sport for Development & Peace” and hoped that the Kingdom will build on the success of the games to impact on youth here and all over the world to eradicate the negative side effects of sports such as violence, corruption, discrimination, hooliganism, nationalism, doping and fraud.

UNIC Director was Chief Guest at the Art of Living Foundation’s commemoration of the UN International Day of Happiness that took place on Friday, 21 March 2014 at the Prince Khalifa Bin Salman Park, Muharraq. The commemoration, which was organized by the Art of Living Foundation with the support of UNIC Manama, the Ministry of Municipalities & Urban Planning and the Municipality of Muharraq featured a “Happiness Walkathon” and the launch of the “2014 Go Green” campaign with the aim of planting 2014 trees in all five governorates in the Kingdom of Bahrain by the end of the year. UNIC Director inaugurated the “Happiness Walkathon” and planted a tree to launch the “Go Green” campaign.  In his address, UNIC Director delivered the statement of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness highlighting that happiness is a deep seated yearning shared by all members of the human family and should be available to all.

UNIC Director attended an event organized by the Bahrain Society for Religious Tolerance & Co-existence which took place on 14 February 2014 at the Beit Al Quran at 16:00 hrs. The main focus of the event was the signing of “The Document of Civil Society Institutions on Religious and Sectarian Tolerance,” in the presence of Dr Khalifa Al Dhahrani, Chairman of the Parliament, Chairman of the Shura Council, UNIC Director, representatives of various religions and sects, diplomats and members of NGOs, which will be submitted to His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa for ratification. The document which was prepared by the Bahrain Society of Tolerance and Religious Co-existence (Ta’ayush), the Abdulrahman Kanoo Cultural Centre and the Bahrain Journalists Association, reaffirms the Kingdom’s position as a home for all people, whatever be their religious beliefs or sects. UNIC Director delivered the statement of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the International Day of Tolerance 2013 as well as on the World Interfaith Harmony Week. At the conclusion of the event, all guests released white doves into the sky as a sign of peace and solidarity.

In line with the launch of the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, UNIC Director visited the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Bahrain H E Taha Mohammed A Qadir on 19 January 2014 and presented him with Secretary-General’s statement on the occasion. UNIC Director briefed the ambassador on the General Assembly resolution that assigned 2014 as the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People and discussed ways and means of raising awareness through joint activities, campaigns and events in order to achieve greater solidarity with the Palestinian People.

For the second consecutive year, as per the request of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Government of the State of Kuwait, UNIC Director served as the UN Media Coordinator during the the 2nd International Donor Conference on Syria that took place in Kuwait from 12-15 January 2014. As the media spokesperson for the conference and the media focal point for the UN, UNIC Director provided full support to the Ministry of Information in Kuwait and played a key role in the success of the conference.

On 09 January 2014, UNIC Director joined the Southern Governorate for a press conference to announce the inauguration Al Basta Market organized under the patronage of the Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sport H H Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. The market, which was inaugurated by H H Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, is sponsored by Tamkeen and will serve as a platform for Bahraini youth to display their capabilities in various fields and showcase their products. It will also help support owners of small and medium enterprises to market their products.

At the invitation of the Ministry of Social Development, UNIC Director attended the Nasser Bin Hamad Creativity Awards for the Disabled that was held on 25 December 2013 at the Shk Al Farsi Centre for Total Communication, Riffa Bahrain. H H Prince Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the patron of the event, honoured disabled persons from the Gulf region for their achievements in various fields in the presence of the Minister of Social Development, H E Fatima Al Balooshi and other dignitaties. UNIC Director was interviewed by Bahrain TV at the sidelines of the event where he lauded the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts to empower disabled persons in the country and in the region.

On 21 December 2013, UNIC Director joined the Minister of Culture, H E Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa and the Southern Governor, H E Shaikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa in inaugurating “Phase One” of the renovation of the “Tree of Life” which included the construction of a circular wall that would protect the 400 year old tree from vandalism or damages. The “Tree of Life” is a popular tourist attraction in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

On 19 December 2013, UNIC Director received Moroccan traveler and leader of the Morocco Hassaniya Scouts Hussain Al Khrad, who was on a tour of the Arab nations, at his office. UNIC Director praised Mr Al Khrad’s selfless efforts in promoting peace and tolerance in the Arab region. Prior to Mr Al Khrad’s visit to UNIC, UNIC Director attended a tree planting ceremony along with the Moroccan Ambassador to Bahrain H E Ahmed Rashid Al Khattabi and members of the Bahrain Society for Tolerance and Coexistence of Religions (Ta’Ayoush Bahrain Society) where Mr Al Khrad planted a tree underscoring the significance of peace, tolerance and solidarity.

In line with the United Nations declaration of 29 November of each year as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Embassy of the State of Palestine with the support of UNIC and the Bahrain Journalists Association commemorated the day through an official function on Monday, 02 December 2013 at the Bahrain Journalists Association head quarters. The event involved statements from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered by UNIC Director Nejib Friji, the Minister of State for Information Affairs, HE Samira Rajab, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine H.E Taha Mahmood A Qadir and by the Ambassador of Morocco H E Ahmed Rachid Khattabi. The event was well attended by ambassadors and heads of missions, media, civil society, government officials and members of the Palestinian community.

In line with the UN4U initiative and as a part of the school’s “Enrichment Session”, UNIC Director along with the UN Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann visited the St. Christopher’s school on 11 December 2013 to brief the students on the role of the UN as well as to raise awareness on the MY World Global Survey. A voting booth was set up and all the students and staff of the school cast their vote. The event also included an interactive quiz session and a presentation of certificates to the 14 students who participated in the MY World Global Presentation that took place during the UN Day reception on 24 October 2013.

On 09 December 2013, UNIC Director inaugurated the Model United Nations (MUN) session organized by the Abdulrahman Kanoo International School that bought together students from various schools from the Gulf Countries. The MUN was held under the patronage of UNIC Director who in his opening statement stressed the importance of MUN in spreading the cultural of dialogue, mutual understanding, peaceful, political & diplomatic means of solving differences. He also encouraged all students to take part in the MY World Global Survey to enlighten the UN & International Community on the “global Citizens” aspirations’ & choices to determine the next sustainable goals.

In order to raise awareness on the MY World Global Survey and to encourage the citizens and residents of Bahrain to cast their vote, a MY World Global Survey voting booth was set up by the UN Country Team with the support of the Gulf Petrochemicals Industries Co (GPIC) at the City Centre on 08 & 09 November 2013 respectively. The UN Day was celebrated by the UN Country Team (UNCT), Bahrain on Thursday, 24 October 2013 under the patronage and with the participation of Ministry of Information Affairs & the Ministry of Foreign Affairs respectively.  The focus of the UNCT Bahrain’s UN Day commemoration this year was the MY World Global Survey and UNIC worked closely with the UNRC office to make this year’s functions a success.  The morning’s official function and press conference was held under the patronage of H E Samira Rajab, Minister of State for Information Affairs and included a painting session at the UNIC library hall by 16 young painters from Al Salam School who were groomed by Bahraini painter Abbas Al Mosawi.  The young painters’ work of art depicted the 16 priorities of the MY World Survey; the 16 paintings were eventually pieced together to form one large work of art illustrating the MY World Global Survey.  The evening’s reception took place under the patronage of H E Ghanem Fadhel Al Buainain, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs at the Al Fanar Hall, Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel and involved a presentation on the MY World Global Survey led by UNIC Director Nejib Friji along with 16 students from the St.Christopher’s School who recited the 16 priorities of the MY World survey.

On 06 October 2013, UNIC Director briefed 50 students during the 2nd Bahrain Universities Model United Nations (BAHMUN) training session that took place at the General Organization for Youth & Sports Innovation Centre, Umm Al Hassam, Bahrain.  UNIC Director briefed the students on the role of the UN in the world and in the region in general and in Bahrain in particular.  UNIC Director also drew attention to the MY World Global Survey and encouraged the students to cast their vote in the survey.

For the second consecutive year, UNIC joined the Regional Institute of Autism (RIA) in commemorating the International Day of Peace by hosting the “Peace One Day Football League”. The two day event which started on Friday, 20 September 2013 at the Soccer City in Saar, Bahrain and culminated with the finals on Saturday, 21 September 2012 from 19:00-22:00 hrs featured a football league that bought together 30 teams from all over Bahrain.


UNIC Manama’s Meeting with Mr Somen Debnath (Around the World on a Bicycle for AIDS Awareness)

UNIC Director received Mr Somen Debnath, an Indian national who has been travelling all over the world since 2004 on a bicycle on a mission called “Around the World on a Bicycle Tour” to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS as well as to spread the message of peace among youths, schools and colleges that he visits during the course of his journey. Bahrain is the 80th country that Mr Debnath was visiting. Mr Debnath aims to cover all 191 countries i.e. 200,000 Kms and reaching nearly 20 million people by the year 2020. Mr Debnath thanked Mr Friji for his time and words of encouragement and presented him with a poster highlighting his tour. UNIC Director hailed Mr Debnath’s selfless efforts to promote awareness on AIDS the world over and wished him the very best in his future endeavours.

In full coordination with UNDESA, UNIC Manama extended full support and assistance to the UN Department of Economic & Social Affairs in organizing the UN Public Service Forum and Awards Ceremony which took place in Manama, Bahrain from 24-27 June 2013 at the Bahrain National Theatre and the Bahrain International Circuit respectively. In addition to being actively involved in organizing various media related elements of the forum, UNIC played a key role in arranging with the Ministry of Information to sponsor a producer from UNTV as well as an Information Officer from UNOG to cover the forum. Furthermore, UNIC Director was the moderator of the Ministerial Round Table on “How to Promote Innovation and Citizen Engagement for Effective Governance” which involved 20 participants i.e ministers and heads of delegation from different countries and served as the Master of Ceremony at the UN Public Service Awards function.

On 19 June 2013, UNIC supported and attended an event on “Food Preservation” under the World Environment Day 2013 theme “Think, Eat, Save” organized by Bahrain’s General Organzation for Youth & Sports (GOYS) with the assistance of Charbal Events Production & Services at the Ramli Mall in Aali, Bahrain.  The three day event which opened on 19 June 2013 at 10:30 hrs was attended by H E Hisham Al Jowder, President of GOYS, UNIC Director, Nejib Friji as well as other guests and invitees.  The aim of the event was to raise awareness about combating food wastage by introducing people to different methods of food conversation through interactive activities such as Weighing Corner, Recycling Kitchen, Kids Craft Corner, Beauty Corner and Awareness films and posters.  UNIC Director delivered the statement of the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and was further interviewed by Bahrain TV and Radio Bahrain where he stressed on the SG’s call to reduce food waste so that we can save money and resources, minimize environmental impacts and most importantly move towards a world where everyone has enough to eat.

On 05 June 2013, UNIC supported and attended the World Environment Day 2013 commemoration organized by the Bahrain Japanese Business & Friendship Society in cooperation with the United Nations Country Team that took place at the Hawar International School in West Riffa, Kingdom of Bahrain at 10:00 hrs.  Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil and Gas Holding Company was the chief guest at the event which was attended by students, UN Officials, citizens and NGOs.  UNIC Director delivered the statement of of the Secretary-General on environment day where he stressed on the SG’s call for all actors in the global food chain to take responsibility for environmentally sustainable and socially equitable food systems.

UNIC Director participated at the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day organized by the Ministry of Information and the Bahrain Journalists Association at the Capital Club on 04 May 2013 at 19:00 hrs.  The event was led by the Minister of State for Information Affairs H E Samira Rajab and was attended by the 300 plus members of the association.  Furthermore, on 05 May 2013, UNIC Director attended the World Press Freedom Day commemoration organized by the Bahrain Women’s Union and the Riffa Women’s Group that took place at the Riffa Cultural & Charity Society.  The event also involved an awards ceremony where ten young journalists from different media outlets in Bahrain were recognized for their contributions; UNIC Director distributed the certificates to the awardees.  At both events, UNIC Director delivered the statement of the Secretary-General on World Press Freedom Day stating that Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and highlighting the theme of this year’s commemoration which is “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”, which emphasizes the need for action to upholding the right of journalists to carry out their vital work.

UNIC Director Nejib Friji received H E Ahmed Mohamed Al Jarwan, Speaker of the Cairo based Arab Parliament who visited the UN House in Manama on the sidelines of his visit to Bahrain to participate in the opening ceremony of the 21st Heritage Festival Traditional Cafes at the invitation of the Minister of Culture & Tourism, H E Shaikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa.  H E Al Jarwan met Mr Friji and discussed ways and means of enhancing cooperation between the Arab Parliament and the UN in support of common objectives and goals in serving humanity, peace and human development in particular.  Mr Friji further stated that he looked forward to the promotion of cooperation between the Arab Parliament and the different UN bodies to the level of partnership to better serve the issues of peace and human development in the Arab region.

UNIC Director Nejib Friji was guest speaker at the AMA International School’s commemoration of International Mother Earth Day 2013 that took place from 10:00-13:00 hrs at the school’s premises in Budaiya.  The event which involved the active participation of the school’s students within the age group of 06-12 years, featured an art & craft exhibition, dance and music recitals and planting trees, all focusing on the importance of protecting the earth.  Mr Friji delivered the statement of the Secretary-General and further stressed on the importance of the youth’s contribution in preserving our natural resources and protecting the earth for future generations.

UNIC Director was guest speaker at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Bahrain Model United Nations (BAHMUN XVIII) that was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports President & Chairman of the Bahraini Olympic Committee on 12th & 13th April 2013 at Al-Hekma International School. The event comprised of 140 students from 20 schools in Bahrain representing the delegates of member countries as well as an audience of 300-400 people comprising principals, teachers, students, diplomats and government officials.   Prior to the event itself, UNIC Director also held a briefing session with 140 student delegates on the role of the UN.

The Bahrain Businesswomen Association, with UNIC’s support and participation, organized a symposium entitled “The Role of Women in Peacemaking” which took place on 08 April 2013 at the office of the association in Mahooz, Kingdom of Bahrain. The purpose of the seminar/workshop was to highlight an initiative aimed at safeguarding women’s rights during peacekeeping, peace-building and post-conflict situations. The initiative comes against a backdrop of the UN’s unsuccessful efforts to implement the Security Council resolution 1325, which it had approved 13 years ago.

UNIC joined the UNCT Bahrain in launching the Global Human Development Report in the Kingdom of Bahrain on 02 April 2013 at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel from 09:00 to 12:00 hrs.  The launch was preceded by a press conference moderated by UNIC Director.  During the launching ceremony, statements were delivered UNDP Resident Representative, Peter Grohmann, Tamkeen Chairman and Political & Economic Affairs Advisor at the Court of the Crown Prince, H E Shaikh Mohammed Bin Essa Al Khalifa and Undersecretary for International Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H E Karim Shaker.  In his address, Mr Grohmann highlighted that Bahrain had ranked 48 out of 187 in the report adding that Bahrain had maintained its position as first in the Gulf for education and health care.  H E Shaikh Mohammed Bin Essa Al Khalifa stated that Bahrain should be proud of its achievement and that al though there are challenges facing the country, it was hoped that the national dialogue will overcome these challenges.  He further highlighted HRH The Crown Prince’s message which was to aim high in the world and not just the Arab world.  This was followed by a debate on the implications of the report also led by UNIC Director that involved scholars, members from the Supreme Council for Women, civil society and the media.

The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in the Kingdom of Bahrain led by UNIC commemorated International Women’s Day on Wednesday, 20 March 2013 at 11:00 hrs at the UN House Conference Hall with the cooperation and participation of The Supreme Council for Women, the Shura Council and the National Institution for Human Rights.  The function which aimed at reinvigorating commitment to end violence against women was attended by representatives from The Supreme Council for Women, the Shura Council, the National Institution for Human Rights, Ministry of Education, Arabian Gulf University and members from various women’s organizations in the Kingdom such as Bahrain Women’s Union, Awal Women’s Society, Bahrain Young Ladies Association to name a few.   During the event, statements were delivered by Mrs Dhawiya Sharaf Al Alawi, Assistant Secretary-General for the Supreme Council for Women, Mr Peter Grohmann, UNDP Resident Representative & UN Resident Coordinator, Dr Jehad Abdullah Mohd Al Fadhel Member of the Shura Council and Ms Latifa Rashid Al Jalahma from the National Institution for Human Rights.  A song entitled “One Woman” launched by UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality & Women Empowerment, in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day was also be screened.  “One Woman” is a musical celebration of women worldwide, featuring 25 artists from 20 countries across the globe.

UNIC co-organized a photo exhibition on nuclear non-proliferation entitled “”From a Culture of Violence to a Culture of Peace- toward a World Free from Nuclear Weapons“along with the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (DERASAT), Soka Gakkai International (SGI), International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and Inter Press Service (IPS).  The purpose of the exhibition was to highlight issues of nuclear weapons through the lens of human security, while placing the work of their abolition at the heart of building a culture of peace. Since the exhibition was launched by SGI in 2007, it has been shown in more than 230 venues in 29 countries; Manama is the first city in the Middle East region to host this exhibition.   The exhibition was inaugurated on 12 March 2013 by H E Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs at the Bahrain National Museum; it was moved to the Seef Mall from 13-23 March 2013 where it was open to the general public. 

Prior to inauguration, a joint press conference was held on 10 March 2013 at 14:00 hrs at the UN House Conference Hall to announce the official launch of the exhibition on 12 March 2013. The press conference, which was moderated by UNIC Director, was attended by Bahrain’s Minster of State for Foreign Affairs, H E Ghanim Fadhel Al Buainain, UNDP Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann, The Ambassador of Japan to Bahrain, H E Shigeki Sumi, SGI’s Executive Director for Peace Affairs, Mr Hirotsugu Terasaki, Regional Campaigner for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Mr Nasser Burdestani, Director of Arabic Services at Inter Press Service (IPS), Mr Baher Kamal all of whom delivered statements emphasizing the importance of nuclear non-proliferation.

On 19 December 2012, the Ministry of Education and UNIC organized a visit of 30 students and 15 teachers from 10 government schools to the UN House for a briefing session on the global role of the UN, in the region & the UN Country Team and in Bahrain. The session involved presentations from UNIC Director Nejib Friji, UNDP Assistant Resident Representative Mohammed Al Sharif, UNEP Information and Outreach Officer, Marie Daher, and UNIDO’s Mohammed Kamal and Ms. Faaiza Adil. The UN officials, the students and teachers had a questions & answers’ session leading to an interactive and insightful discussion.

UNIC Director attended and inaugurated an exhibition on combating corruption that was organized by the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security in commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day. The five day exhibition held under the patronage of Bahrain’s Minister of Interior H E Lieutenant-General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, was inaugurated by UNIC Director along with the Governor of Bahrain’s Southern Governorate H E Shaikh Abdulla bin Rashid Al-Khalifa, the President of the University of Bahrain Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Janahi.  UNIC Director delivered the Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s statement on the occasion of anti-corruption day and was further interviewed by Bahrain TV where he emphasized the UN Chief’s call on everyone to work towards a sustainable future where corruption is exposed and rejected, where integrity prevails, and where the hopes and dreams of millions are realized.

In the evening, UNIC Director also attended the Bahrain Transparency Society’s commemoration of International Anti-Corruption Day which took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel at 19:00 hrs.  UNIC Director delivered the statement of the Secretary-General and further highlighted the role of UNODC in combating corruption in both member countries and in the civil societies.

On 03 December 2012, UNIC Director moderated a press conference in commemoration of World AIDS Day organized by the Ministry of Health and the UN Country Team (UNCT), on Monday, 03 December 2012 at 10:00 hrs at the UN House Conference Hall.  The event involved statements from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered by UN Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann and the Minister of Health H.E. Sadiq AbdulKarim Al Shehabi.  Also present was Member of Parliament & AIDS Activist, Ms Sumaya Al Jowder.  This was followed by a screening of a 15 minute film on AIDS entitled “The Light Journey” produced by UNDP Bahrain with the support of the Ministry of Health and a Question & Answer session with the media.

In line with the United Nations declaration of 29 November of each year as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Embassy of the State of Palestine with the support of the UN Country Team (UNCT) and the Kingdom of Bahrain commemorated the day through an official function on Thursday, 29 November 2012 at 11:00 hrs at the UN House Conference Hall.  The event involved statements from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon delivered by UNIC Director & OIC UN Resident Coordinator Mr Nejib Friji, the Minister of State for Information Affairs, HE Samira Rajab, the Ambassador of the State of Palestine H.E Taha Mahmood A Qadir and Al Quds Committee HE Ahmed Rachid Khattabiby the Ambassador of Morocco, that was delivered in the presence of officials, ambassadors, diplomats, civil society representatives and media.

UN Day 2012 3-UNIC & UNEP Directors with Students from AMA School

The UN Day was celebrated by the UNIC-led UN Country Team (UNCT), Bahrain with the participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, 20 October 2012 at 19:00 hrs at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel.  The official function/reception was well attended by ministers, MPs, ambassadors, diplomatic corps, academia, civil society, media and members of the UN family. The official function, which was conducted by UNIC Director, Nejib Friji, included statements from the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE Ghanim Fadhil Al Buainain, UNDP Resident Representative & UN Resident Coordinator, Peter Grohmann and UNEP Regional Director, Iyad Abumoghli.  The evening also featured a presentation on the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development “The Future We Want” and its impact on women, youth and the environment, by six students from the AMA International School, a musical recital by Ms Dana Smith (pianist) and Ms Alicia Engley, (violinist) and screening of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message for UN Day 2012.

UNIC, the Regional Institute of Autism (RIA) and Ajyad Organization marked the International Day of Peace by organizing the “Peace One Day Football League”. The event which took place on Friday, 21 September 2012 from 13:00 to 20:00 hrs at the Soccer City in Saar, Bahrain featured a football league that brought together 24 teams from all over Bahrain, from all communities, including two women teams. The event included a Women Bazar that featured small business women’s creations. UNIC Director delivered the message of the Secretary-General and further stated that the tournament was an opportunity to promote tolerance consciousness and to advocate among the youth dialogue, mutual understanding and the culture of peace among different individuals.

On 01 September 2012, in full cooperation with the UN DPI DSC & The Office of the Spokesperson of the Secretary-General, UNIC Director Nejib Friji traveled to Dubai, UAE to provide assistance to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during his visit to the country.  The Secretary-General arrived in Dubai following his visit to Tehran, Iran where he participated in the Non-Aligned Movement Summit.  UNIC Director arranged an interview between the Secretary-General and Reuters (TV, Wire & Photo Services) that took place at the Dubai International Airport’s VIP Lounge.  The interview focused on the Secretary-General’s visit to Tehran, his talks with the Iranian authorities on various issues such as nuclear warfare, the situation in Syria and human rights issues.

UNIC joined Bahrain’s General Organization for Youth & Sports (GOYS) in commemorating International Youth Day under the theme “Building a Better World: Partnership with Youth.” The event which took place at the Sofitel Hotel was attended by HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chairman of Bahrain’s Supreme Council for Youth & Sports (SCYS), HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Vice Chairman of SCYS, Mr Hisham Al Jowder, President of GOYS, Shaikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, SCYS Secretary-General, UNIC Director Nejib Friji as well as other dignitaries, officials and hundreds of youngsters who were awarded for their pioneering achievements. During the event, UNIC Director delivered the statement of the Secretary-General and was further awarded a shield by HH Shaikh Nasser Al Khalifa in recognition of the UN’s outstanding youth initiatives in Bahrain and in the world.

UNIC Director met Bahrain’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, HE Ghanem Fadhel Al Buainain where he briefed the minister about UNIC’s role in general and in the region in particular. The minister lauded the centre’s efforts and that of the UN Country Team in Bahrain adding that he would extend full support to the UN Country Team in its activities.

In line with the United Nations declaration of 18 July 2012 as Nelson Mandela International Day, UNIC Manama mobilized the three Rotary Clubs of Bahrain namely Manama, Salmaniya and Adliya, to a joint action by launching a charity campaign sponsored by the Rotary Clubs to donate food boxes to 1000 needy families during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The event took place on Wednesday, 18 July 2012 at 12:45 hrs at the Gilgamish Ballroom, Golden Tulip Hotel and was attended by HE Samira Bint Ebrahim Rajab, Minister of State for Information, Mr Robert Timmers, President of Rotary Club Manama, Mr Khalid Al Turk, President of Rotary Club Salmaniya, Ms Sajida Tabbarra, President of Rotary Club Adliya, Nejib Friji, Director of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) as well as several Rotarians and guests. During the event, statements were delivered by the minister, the Presidents of the three Rotary Clubs and by UNIC Director.  The Secretary-General’s video message for the day was also screened.

On 04 June 2012, UNIC Director Nejib Friji met Bahrain’s Minister of State for Information Affairs, HE Samira Ebrahim Bin Rajab to drum up both government and media circles for the forthcoming World Environment Day 2012 and the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development that will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 20-22 June 2012.  The Minister emphasized the Kingdom of Bahrain leadership’s support to sustainable human resources development issues as a whole and the significance to make a success of the Rio+20 Conference set to be held by heads of states and governments from UN-member countries in addition to thousands of participants from private organizations, NGOs, in order to formulate methodology to curb poverty and boost social justice and ensure the protection of the environment of an increasingly overpopulated planet.

On 23 May 2012, UNIC Director met the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Women (Bahrain’s advisory body to the government on women’s issues chaired by HRH Sheikha Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the wife of Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa) Ms Hala Al Ansari to discuss and explore all aspects of cooperation between the council and the UN system in Bahrain in order to promote joint campaigns focusing on women’s issues.  It was agreed that regular informal meetings would take place to further discuss and finalize specific programmes to move forward in this area.

On 23May 2012, UNIC Director attended the 3rd Press Conference of the Gulf Press Association (GPA), an association that comprises publisher and Editors In Chief of major newspapers in the Gulf region that took place at the Gulf Hotel.  UNIC Director had the opportunity to meet with Mr Nasser Mohd Othman, founder of the GPA and discussed with him the need to strengthen and enhance cooperation between the GPA and the UN system in the region through joint activities aimed at promoting the UN’s goals to further development and capacity building within the countries of the region.
