Media Training for Volunteers from Non-Governmental Organizations
UNIC Manama, in partnership with the Bahrain Voluntary Works Society and the Bahrain Social Media Club organized a media training for volunteers from Non-Governmental Organizations and UN Country Team staff members that took place on 26 November 2016 at the Isa Cultural Centre in Bahrain. The full day workshop provided training to participants on various aspects of media management such as writing news stories, drafting press releases, organizing press conferences and utilizing social media portals. As one of the trainers, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi briefed participants on press conferences, spokesperson & media management.
Visit of Applied Science University Students to UNIC Manama
In line with the UN4U initiative, students from the Applied Science University in the Kingdom of Bahrain visited UNIC Manama on 24 November 2016 to better understand the role and workings of the United Nations. The students were briefed by UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi on the structure of the UN, the role of the various UN agencies in the country and region as well as on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Commemoration of the United Nations Day 2016
The UN Country Team in the Kingdom of Bahrain commemorated the 71st anniversary of the United Nations on Monday, 24 October 2016 with the support and participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labour and Social Development. The focus of this year’s celebration was the Sustainable Development Goals and the steps being taken at the national level to ensure their implementation. A press conference led by UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi took place in the morning of the UN Day at the UN House Conference room with the participation of HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amin El Sharkawi, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative and Heads of UN Agencies and their representatives from UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain, UNDP Bahrain and WMO. The UN Day reception took place on the evening of 24 October 2016 at the Grand Ambassador Ballroom, Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel and was well attended by Ministers, Ambassadors, Representatives from Media, Civil Society and Academia. The highlight of the reception was the showcasing of specially designed adaptable wheelchairs to raise awareness on UNDP Bahrain’s programme for persons with disabilities and the importance of creating an inclusive society by improving accessibility, independence and mobility for the disabled in line with SDG Nos 4, 8, 10, 11 & 17. The wheelchair initiative was inaugurated by the Minister for Labour & Social Development, HE Jameel Bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan following which all dignitaries, ambassadors and invitees had the opportunity to try the adaptable wheelchairs in order to help them understand the difference between an ordinary wheelchair and the adaptable ones and also to be able to view and experience things from the perspective of a wheelchair bound individual.
Educational Outreach Activities to Raise Awareness on the UN’s Role & the Sustainable Development Goals
In line with the UN4U initiative and the UN Country Team Bahrain’s 71st anniversary celebrations, UNIC Manama organized the following two educational outreach activities on 18 October 2016 to raise awareness on the UN’s role in the country/region as well as on the Sustainable Development Goals:
- A field trip to the UN House of 35 school students and 9 teachers from various public schools in Bahrain organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
- Visit of UN Officials to the AMA International University for a students’ briefing session
Both events involved briefings by officials from the various UN agencies based in Bahrain such as the UN RC Office, UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain, UNIC Manama and WMO. This was followed by an interactive session where the students and teachers were given an opportunity to ask questions and exchanges ideas with the agency focal points.
Commemoration of International Day of Peace
UNIC Manama, under the patronage of HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain and with the support of Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club, commemorated the International Day of Peace through an event that took place on 21 September 2016 at the UN House Conference Room. The event was attended by HE Dhafer Ahmed AlUmran, Asst. Undersecretary for GCC & Western Countries Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain, UN Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi, UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi, representatives from the UN Country Team, Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club. The highlight of the commemoration was the launch of a speech writing contest for youth on the subject of “World Peace and Sustainable Development” as a way of raising awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals in the country and region. The competition organized in partnership with Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club is open to youth from GCC countries and entries are required to focus on any of the 17 Global Goals and how each of them can pave the way for achieving peace.
Commemoration of the International Day of Yoga
UNIC Manama joined the Ministry of Health, the Bahrain Cancer Care Group and the Indian Embassy of Bahrain in commemorating the International Day of Yoga through a seminar aimed at showcasing the health benefits of learning and practicing yoga,. The event which was attended by over 150 people, took place on 21 February 2016 under the patronage of H E Faeqa Bint Saeed Al Saleh, Minister of Health for Bahrain who addressed the gathering. Statements were also delivered by the Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, H E Alok Kumar Sinha as well as UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi who delivered the Secretary-General’s message on Yoga Day and drew attention to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No 3 which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for people of all ages. This was followed by a presentation by Bahraini Yoga-Therapy Specialist Fatima Al Mansoori who highlighted the importance of yoga in improving overall well-being and health.
Meeting with President of the University of Bahrain
UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi joined the UN Country Team led by the UN Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi, for a meeting with the newly appointed President of the University of Bahrain, Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah to discuss areas of future cooperation between the University and the UN Country Team. During the meeting which took place on 19 June 2016 at the University’s premises, the President was briefed on the role of the UN Agencies in Bahrain and several areas of possible mutual cooperation were discussed including raising awareness on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among the University’s students.
Kids Fun Day Out Event for Children with Special Needs
UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi attended a “Kids Fun Day Out” event for children with special needs organized by Bahrain for All in partnership with the Regional Institute for Autism (RIA), UCO Rehabilitation Centre, Special Needs Families Support (SFS) and with the support of UNDP Bahrain and UNIC Manama. More than 100 children with special needs enjoyed a fun filled day of games, activities, painting and music that took place on 04 June 2016 at Seef Mall in Muharraq, Kingdom of Bahrain. The event aimed at raising awareness on the importance of engaging with differently-abled individuals in order to create equal opportunities for all. UNIC Director spent the day interacting with the children and further distributed prizes to all the children who participated in the various activities.
Social Media Training for Media & Communication Focal Points in Oman
UNIC Manama supported the Government of the Sultanate of Oman in organizing a Social Media Training workshop that took place at the Hormuz Grand Hotel in the Sultanate of Oman. The workshop was attended by media and communications focal points from various ministries and government bodies in Oman including the Ministry of Information and the Omani News Agency who were briefed on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the ways in which social media platforms can be utilized to raise awareness on the Global Goals.
UN Country Team’s Open Discussion on the SDGs with Members of International Social Media Club
UNIC Manama organized an open discussion between Bahraini members of the International Social Media Club and the UN Country Team on 04 May 2016 at the UN House conference room to brief the members on the role of the UN agencies in the country/region and on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Club members were briefed in detail on the work of the UN Country Team in general and on the importance of the Global Goals in particular by the UN Resident Coordinator a.i. and UNDP Resident Representative a.i Amin El Sharkawi, UNEP Regional Director, Iyad Abumogli, WMO Regional Representative, Dr Hesham Abdel Ghany and UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi.
UNIC Manama’s Participation at the First Edition of the Bahrain Chapter of the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) Conference
UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi was one of the main guest speakers at the inauguration of the first edition of the Bahrain Chapter of the Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) conference that took place on 28 April 2016 at the Al Hekma International School premises. UNIC Director’s address emphasized the importance of MUN Conferences in providing students with a platform to voice their opinions and to discuss issues that affect the world and further shed light on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adding that youth have a crucial role to play in achieving the SDGs.
UN Corner at Al Wasat Newspaper’s Used Books Exhibition
UNIC Manama in partnership with the Al Wasat Newspaper created a UN Corner at the newspaper’s Used Books Exhibition that took place from 21-23 April 2016 at the Country Mall in Bahrain. With UNIC Manama’s support, the newspaper devoted a section of the Exhibition to display UN publications and reports and further placed the “17 Goals to Transform Our World” logo on their announcement flyers. Roll-up banners featuring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in English & Arabic were also displayed prominently at the exhibition to raise awareness on the 17 Global Goals.
UN Corner at the 17th Bahrain International Book Fair
UNIC Manama in partnership with the University of Bahrain created a UN Corner at the University’s stand at the 17th Bahrain International Book Fair that took place from 24 March-03 April 2016 at the Bahrain National Museum. In view of the transfer of UNIC Manama’s library to the University’s Central Library Premises in May 2015 and in order promote the University’s status as a UN Depository Library in Bahrain, the University with UNIC Manama’s support devoted a section of their stand to display latest UN publications and reports which were distributed free of cost to interested visitors.
Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Strategic Partnership between Lions Club International & the United Nations
UNIC Manama joined the Al Areen Lions Club Bahrain in commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Strategic Partnership between Lions Club International & the United Nations. The celebration which was held on 12 March 2016 at the Ramee Grand Seef Hotel was attended by members of Bahrain’s Lions Club Chapter, diplomatic corps and civil society. In his address as Guest Speaker at the event, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi highlighted the several years of successful partnership between the Lions Club and the UN.
Launch of Documentary on UN-Bahrain Partnership in Commemoration of the UN’s 70th Anniversary
UNIC Manama supported the UN Country Team and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the production of a documentary showcasing the historic and enduring partnership between the Government of Bahrain and the UN as part of the UNCT’s 70th anniversary commemoration. The documentary entitled “The UN and Bahrain: An Enduring Partnership” was launched on 21 February 2016 by H E Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kingdom of Bahrain at an official event at the Isa Cultural Center which was attended by ministers, ambassadors, diplomats, academia, civil society, media and UN Bahrain staff members.
