Press Conference Simulation for Young Aspiring Journalists from the Royal Charity Organization
As a part of its 2017 UN Day commemoration activities, UN Manama in partnership with the Royal Charity Organization conducted a press conference simulation for young orphans who are aspiring journalists which took place on 22 October 2017 at the UN House Conference Room. The event which was attended by the Secretary-General of the Royal Charity Organization, H.E. Dr Mustafa Al Sayed, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi and the UN Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi provided the young children with a training opportunity to equip them as they moved forward in their journey to accomplish their goal of becoming successful journalists in the future. 35 young children asked questions about the United Nations, its work and the work of the Royal Charity Organization, as journalists would do at a real press conference, which in turn were answered by the officials present, resulting in a unique and interactive session.
Under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth & Sports Affairs, UNIC Manama in cooperation with Lulu Hypermarket commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child and the United Nations Day by partnering with talented chalk artist Ms Jincy Babu who created a 1240 square feet 3D chalk art to raise awareness on the importance of empowering the girl child as well as on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 3D chalk art, which needs to be viewed from a certain angle, either through 3D lens or through one’s mobile phone camera highlighted the importance of empowering girls and providing them with equal opportunities as well as 6 out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that are crucial to the well-being of girl children the world over. Jincy commenced the art work on 11 October 2017 i.e. the International Day of the Girl Child, at the Ramli Mall’s atrium. The completed art work was inaugurated by H.E. Hisham bin Mohammed Al-Jowder, Minister of Youth & Sports Affairs at an event that took place on 19 October 2017 at at the Ramli Mall in the presence of Ambassadors, media, members of the UN Country Team, government officials and other partners. Following the inauguration, the chalk art was measured for official entry into the Guinness World Records for the largest chalk painting. The artist was backed in this endeavour by UNIC Manama and Lulu Hypermarket. The art work is open for public viewing until Tuesday, 24 October 2017 i.e. United Nations Day.
UN Briefing Session at the University of Bahrain’s College of Law
In line with the UN4U Programme and as a part of the 2017 UN Week activities, UNIC Manama organized a visit of UN Officials to the University of Bahrain on 19 October 2017 in order to provide the students from the University’s College of Law with an opportunity to learn about the UN’s role in the country/region and to interact with UN officials. Around 100 students between the age group of 19-23 years were briefed by the UN Resident Coordinator, Amin El Sharkawi, UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi, WMO Representative for West Asia, Dr Hesham Abdelghany Moussa, UNDP Programme Analyst, Ali Salman and UNEP’s Regional Climate Change Coordinator Dr Abdul-Majeid Haddad on the role of the UN Country Team in the country and region as well as on the Sustainable Development Goals. This was followed by an interactive question and answer session with the students.
UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi briefed students from the University of Bahrain on the 2017 Young Professionals Programme (YPP) examination on 17 August 2017. As Bahrain is among the list of participating countries for this year’s examination, the students, who are pursuing theirs masters degree in various fields, received an in depth briefing on the YPP examination and its application process in order to encourage participation from qualified young Bahrainis seeking a career within the United Nations.
Commemoration of World Youth Skills Day
Under the patronage of Bahrain’s Minister of Labor and Social Development, UNIC Manama and partners commemorated the World Youth Skills Day on Thursday, 20 July 2017 at the Bahrain Society of Engineers by launching an initiative to empower people with autism and down syndrome. The initiative launched in line with the Sustainable Development Goals aimed at recognizing the talents and skills of people, particularly young adults with autism and down syndrome, while honouring their families and encouraging them to support their children.
Commemoration of the International Day of Yoga
Under the patronage of H.E. Faeqa bint Saeed Al-Saleh, Bahrain’s Minister of Health, UNIC Manama in collaboration with a group of volunteers (Helm Insan) and several centers and associations specialized in charity, health and social work commemorated the International Day of Yoga at the Saar Mall on 21 June 2017. The celebration which was organized with a remarkable contribution from Bahraini Yoga Therapy Specialist Prof. Fatima Al Mansoori involved the participation of over 200 people representing a broad section of Bahrain’s society comprising ministries, media community groups and civil societies such as the Bahrain Mobility International, MS society, Islamic association, Abdulrahma Kanoo Social Parents Club to name a few. The event comprised of a seminar, a Yoga session and a Meditation session.
UNIC Director’s Participation at Bahrain Women Union’s Event on Women Achievers
UNIC Director attended an event organized by the Bahrain Women Union to showcase women achievers from Bahrain and from around with world in various arenas such as humanitarian causes, women’s rights, health, education etc. The event which was organized as a follow-up to this year’s International Day of Women celebrations took place on 21 May 2017 at the Bahrain Society of Engineers in Juffair, Kingdom of Bahrain. In his address, UNIC Director highlighted that gender parity and the empowerment of women were important agendas for the UN with Goal No 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals being devoted exclusively to gender quality. He further stressed on the economic empowerment of women as crucial to women being able to contribute as equal partners to the development process and to the betterment of society at large.
UNIC Director’s Participation at Bahrain For All Kids Fun Day Out Event
For the second consecutive year, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi participated and interacted with children with special needs at a “Kids Fun Day Out” event organized by Bahrain for All in partnership with the Hidd Rehabilitation Centre for Special Needs, the Ministry of Interior and UNIC Manama aimed at raising awareness on the importance of actively engaging with differently-abled individuals and creating equal opportunities for all. Over 100 children with special needs enjoyed a fun-filled day of games, storytelling, music and painting that took place on 20 May 2017 at the Dragon City Mall. In a special statement issued to mark the event, UNIC Director expressed his appreciation to the Government of Bahrain, particularly HRH The Prime Minister for his continued support to such notable causes and further emphasized that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals required the full inclusion and effective participation of persons with disabilities in the development process.
UNIC Director’s Participation at Underwater Life Conference in Salalah, Sultanate of Oman
UNIC Director delivered a presentation on the Sustainable Development Goals with a particular focus on Goal No 14 i.e. Life Below Water at the “Underwater Life Conference” organized by Oman’s Ministry of Environment in partnership with UNIC Manama, the United Nations Environment Regional Office for West Asia and the Trabat Centre, Oman that took place in Salalah, Oman from 25-26 April 2017. The conference brought together government officials, civil society, researchers and marine experts to raise awareness on the impact on marine life caused by various harmful practices and to explore sustainable ways of preserving marine life. UNIC Director also drew attention to the Ocean Conference that will take place in June 2017 in New York.
Event to Highlight the Importance of the Economic Empowerment of Women
UNIC Manama in partnership with UNIDO Bahrain and the Bahrain Businesswomen Society organized an event on 12 April 2017 to highlight the importance of the economic empowerment of women and its key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In his opening address at the event, UNIC Director highlighted the crucial role that women’s economic empowerment had to play in ending violence against women and in advancing the economic development of society at large.
UNIC’s Participation at Event on Youth Volunteerism
UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi participated at an event on volunteerism organized by the Bahrain Voluntary Works Society in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bahrain and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office on 19 March 2017 at the Bahrain Society of Engineers premises. UNIC Director delivered a presentation that highlighted the role of volunteerism in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and further shed light on the ways and means youth can utilize the media to understand and raise awareness on the Global Goals.
UNIC Director’s Participation as Plenary Speaker at the AMA International University’s 4th Research Colloquium
On 19 March 2017, UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi participated as a plenary speaker at the AMA International University’s 4th Research Colloquium that aimed at highlighting the importance of research and the need to collaborate with international organizations to improve the quality of research. UNIC Director’s presentation focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly the role of science and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) in the achievement of the Global Goals.
Commemoration of International Women’s Day
UNIC Manama joined the Bahrain Women’s Society in commemorating the International Women’s Day that took place on 08 March 2017 at the Bahrain Society of Engineers premises. As the main guest speaker at the event, UNIC Director highlighted Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ statement and the theme of the 2017 Women’s Day. He further emphasized the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women as crucial steps in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
UN Country Team’s Brainstorming Session with the Bahrain Writers’ Association
UNIC Manama organized a brainstorming session between the UN Country Team and the Bahrain Writers’ Association on 06 March 2017 at the Golden Tulip Hotel to discuss ways and means of future cooperation. The UN Country Team, comprising of UN Environment, World Meteorological Organization (WMO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bahrain and UNIC Manama, briefed representatives from the Bahrain Writers’ Association on the role of the various UN agencies as well as on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Briefing on Road Safety at the Rotary Club of Adliya’s Weekly Meeting
UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi was guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Adliya’s weekly meeting that took place on 06 February 2017 at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel. The event was attended by 25 members of the Rotary Club all of whom are dedicated to serving the community. UNIC Director briefed the members on the Decade of Action on Road Safety as well as on the Sustainable Development Goals.
Commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
UNIC Manama in partnership with the Embassy of Palestine to the Kingdom of Bahrain and with the support of Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People through an official function on 30 January 2017 at the UN House. The event involved statements from UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi, UN Environment Regional Director, Dr Iyad Abumoghli who delivered a statement on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator Amin El Sharkawi, the Assistant Undersecretary for GCC & Western Countries Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dhafer Ahmed Alumran, and the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to the Kingdom of Bahrain, H.E Taha Mahmood A Qadir, all of whom pledged their support to the cause of Palestine. The event was well attended by ambassadors, heads of missions and media representatives.
Workshop on Powerful Public Speaking Skills for UN Staff
UNIC Manama in partnership with Y Access Training Solutions organized a training session entitled “Powerful Public Speaking Skills” for UN staff members on 26 January 2017 at the UN House. The training was conducted by Mohamed Ali Shukri, the first Arab to reach the 2006 World Championship of Public Speaking finals in Washington DC, where he was declared one of the “Top Ten Speakers in the World”. Using the Sustainable Development Goals as a case study, participants were taught key techniques for preparing speeches that conveyed messages with impact thereby raising awareness and inspiring action. 19 staff members from the UN Country Team in Bahrain including the UN Resident Coordinator and Heads of UN Agencies attended the highly interactive training session.
Event to Conclude Speech Writing Contest on Peace & Sustainable Development
Further to the Speech Writing Contest on Peace and Sustainable Development that was launched as a part of the 2016 International Day of Peace commemoration organized by UNIC Manama in partnership with the Al Areen Lions Club and the International Social Media Club, an event was organized by UNIC Manama on 05 January 2017 at the UN House to mark the conclusion of the contest. The event was attended by H.E Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amin El Sharkawi, UN Resident Coordinator as well as representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, embassies, members of both the Lions and Social Member Clubs respectively and UN staff members. Four participants from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were selected as the contest finalists and were given an opportunity to present their speeches in front of the dignitaries. The participants were then awarded certificates and cash prizes sponsored by Al Areen Lions Club which were handed over by the Undersecretary for International Affairs and the UN Resident Coordinator.
