Commemoration of the International Day to End Violence against Women & Girls
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25 November 2015, UNIC Manama with the support and participation of Ms Rouaa Al-Hayki, Member of Council of Representatives & Chair of Women & Child Issues at the Parliament, organized a gathering for women colleagues from the UN Country Team in order to provide an opportunity for female colleagues to interact with Ms Al-Hayki on the importance and necessity of combating violence against women and girls and to encourage a dialogue on this issue which continues to be a global pandemic. Women colleagues from UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, the UN RC Office and UNIC Manama participated in the discussion and shared their views on tackling violence against women and girls.
Under-Secretary-General for Communication and Public Information Visits the Sultanate of Oman & the Kingdom of Bahrain
From 16-18 November 2015, Ms Cristina Gallach, the Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information visited the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to strengthen and re-enforce partnerships between the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) and the two countries. The Under-Secretary-General, accompanied by the Acting Director of UNIC Manama, Samir Aldarabi met several key officials in both countries and discussed areas of mutual cooperation aimed at increasing the level of UN information outreach withing the countries.
UNIC Director’s Participation as Plenary Speaker at the AMA International University’s Research Colloquium
UNIC Director, Samir Aldarabi participated as a plenary speaker at the AMA International University’s 3rd Research Colloquium entitled Towards Research and Teaching Quality in Engineering, Information Technology, Business and Natural & Social Sciences” that took place at the University’s campus on 31 October 2015. The event focused on the importance of research and on the need for collaborating with international organizations to improve the quality of research and also highlighted the dynamic role that the university has played in contributing towards the environment and science through valuable research outputs. UNIC Director’s presented on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a particular focus on Goal No 17 on the importance of strengthening the means of Implementation and revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development.
UN Country Team’s Commemoration of the UN’s 70th Anniversary
The United Nations Day and the 70th Anniversary of the organization was celebrated by the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Bahrain on Monday, 26 October 2015 at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel with the support and participation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The focus of the UNCT Bahrain’s UN Day & UN 70 commemoration this year was the historic and enduring partnership between the Government of Bahrain and the United Nations. This was highlighted during the UN Day Reception by the launch of the trailer of a documentary that is expected to be released in December 2015, focusing on the history of Bahrain’s engagement with the UN from independence to its growing international role on the world stage and a photo exhibition showcasing key moments from Bahrain’s participation at the UN from independence till date. HE Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was the Guest of Honor, inaugurated the photo exhibition following the official screening of the documentary trailer.
Field Trip of Public School Students to the UN House
In line with the UN4U campaign and the UN Country Team Bahrain’s 70th anniversary celebrations, 30 school students and eight teachers from nine different public schools in Bahrain visited the UN House as a part of the schools’ field trip. The visit was organized by UNIC Manama in cooperation with the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The visit involved a briefing session on the role of the UN in Bahrain and in the region by officials from the various UN agencies based in Bahrain such as UNDP Bahrain, UNEP ROWA, UNIDO Bahrain, UNIC Manama, WMO and ICAO and screening of UN70 videos. This was followed by an interactive session where the students and teachers were given an opportunity to ask questions and exchanges ideas with the agency focal points.
UN Section at the University of Bahrain’s Central Library Premises
On 07 October 2015, UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi visited the University of Bahrain’s Central Library premises to tour the newly created UN section following the transfer of UNIC Manama’s publications to the University’s premises in May 2015. Over 5000 UN publications and reports, covering a wide range of issues and topics such as environment, development, education, food & agriculture, trade, children, women etc to name a few, were transferred to the University’s premises in order to make UN publications and reports easily accessible to large number of students, researchers and teachers. The UN section has been created within the Central Library’s Special Collections Section where the latest UN publications and reports will be displayed. The remaining publications will be incorporated along with the University’s existing publications based on topic. UNIC Director was received by the University’s Vice President for Academic Programmes & Higher Studies, Dr Waheeb Al-Naser and the Director of Library & Information Services, Dr Hedi Talbi who thanked UNIC Manama for donating the UN publications.
Press Conference on UN Sustainable Development Summit
UNIC Manama in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Social Development and UNDP Bahrain organized a press conference on the UN Sustainable Development Summit taking place in New York from 25-27 September 2015. The purpose of the conference was to raise awareness on this milestone UN Summit as well as to highlight Bahrain’s active participation and commitment to the Post-2015 Development Agenda process. The press conference which took place on 20 September 2015 involved an in depth presentation on the Sustainable Development Summit and the new 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) led by the UN Resident Coordinator Peter Grohmann. This was followed by statements from H E Faeeqa Bint Saeed Al Saleh, Minister of Social Development and Dr Shaikh Abdulla Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary of International Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs who shed light on Bahrain’s success in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the steps being taken at the national level to transition to the SDGs and to achieve the same by 2030 as well as on the delegation from the Government of Bahrain led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa who will be attending the Summit in New York.
Media Briefing Session on the Third International Conference on Financing for Development
UNIC Manama in cooperation with UNDP Bahrain organized a media briefing session on 12 July 2015 for journalists from Bahrain to raise awareness on the Third International Conference on Sustainable Development taking place in Addis Ababa from 12-16 July 2015. The briefing session which took place at the UN House conference room involved a welcome address by UNIC Director Samir Aldarabi, a detailed presentation by the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Peter Grohmann who shed light on the background of the Financing for Development Conference and its importance both globally and at the national level for financing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and a screening of two videos on the Financing for Development Conference.
Commemoration of the International Day of Yoga
UNIC Manama joined the Indian Embassy of Bahrain, The Art of Living Foundation Bahrain Chapter, the Middle East Medical Center (MEM) and Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam in commemorating the International Day of Yoga. The celebrations which took place on 21 June 2015 at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam Auditorium in Segaya kicked off with an interactive yoga and meditation session that was attended by a large number of people. This was followed by a press conference to further shed light on the importance and benefits of Yoga. In his address, Mr Aldarabi expressed his appreciation to the Indian embassy and the other organizers and shed light on the UN’s decision to proclaim 21 June as the International Day of Yoga following the address of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly. He further delivered the Message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for the International Day of Yoga and drew attention to the fact that Yoga offered a simple, accessible and inclusive means to promote physical and spiritual health and well-being and also promoted respect for one’s fellow human beings and for the planet we share.
